I’m back with a West Bali story! Last April, I went on another adventure-filled day exploring West Bali for the third time. This trip was a little bit different because I was not alone. Bayu, a work colleague from my current workplace, accompanied me for this trip, and he’s also a local from Negara, who became my guide. It took around 2,5 hours to reach Negara from Sanur by a scooter. The traffic was smooth as I left in the morning.
Palasari Village: A Unique Cultural Blend
Our first stop was Palasari Village. Have you ever heard of it? This is not your typical Balinese village. Located in the western part of Bali, Palasari Village is a unique place where Catholicism and Balinese culture blend harmoniously. The community here is predominantly Catholic, a rarity in predominantly Hindu Bali, offering a refreshing perspective on the island’s diverse culture. When you are planning a West Bali trip, make sure to include this in your itinerary.
Exploring Palasari’s Landmarks

Our first stop was the Palasari Dam, a perfect spot for nature lovers. The dam’s calm waters mirror the lush greenery surrounding it, creating a picturesque scene that is both calming and inspiring. The last time I visited, it was raining. But as you can see from the pictures below, the dam looks amazing in the sunlight.

From there, we moved to Goa Maria, a sacred cave dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This peaceful sanctuary is a place of pilgrimage and reflection, and its quiet beauty left a lasting impression on us.

The highlight of Palasari is the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. This grand structure stands as timeless proof of the village’s rich history and faith. The church’s stunning architecture, blending traditional Balinese elements with classic Catholic designs, is amazing. We didn’t go inside as from my previous experience, I was told that only members of the congregation may enter the church. So, we just wandered around the garden.

A Taste of West Bali Local Flavor: Ayam Betutu Men Tempeh
After immersing in the cultural and spiritual essence of Palasari, it was time to refuel. We had a quick stop at Ayam Betutu Men Tempeh, a local eatery popular for its mouth-watering Ayam Betutu. This Balinese dish, featuring slow-cooked chicken infused with a medley of spices, was just what we needed to recharge. The rich, savory flavors are irresistible, making it a must-visit spot for anyone traveling through the area.

There’s a funny story when I visited, where I almost got involved in a catfight with the staff due to a little misunderstanding when I ordered the food. Luckily, it was quickly solved and I did not create a scene there.
Karang Sewu: Beachside Bliss of West Bali
With our happy tummy, we set off to our second destination: Karang Sewu in Gilimanuk. Known for its breathtaking sunrise views, Karang Sewu is a coastal gem that shows the beauty of the ocean. Although we arrived in the afternoon, which meant missing sunrise views, the beauty of the place was still undeniable.
Afternoon Delight at Karang Sewu

The afternoon sun casts a golden glow over the beach, highlighting the crystal-clear waters and the expansive horizon. We spent our time strolling along mangrove forests and the sandy shore. I’m not going to lie, the sun was a little intimidating and hot! It was around 1 PM, in the middle of April when the humidity level reached its highest in Bali. However, that didn’t stop us from taking good pictures. We waited around the dense trees until the heat was tolerable.

Tips for Travelers
If you’re planning a visit to West Bali, here are a few tips to enhance your experience:
- Bring sunscreen: The tropical sun can be intense, especially on the beach.
- Visit early for the sunrise: If you can, make it to Karang Sewu at dawn to catch the spectacular sunrise.
- Explore with a local guide: This is optional, but having someone like Bayu will make your trip more insightful and enjoyable.
West Bali’s unique blend of cultures and stunning landscapes never disappoint. From the beauty of Palasari Village to the coastal charm of Karang Sewu, every corner of this region has something special to offer. It’s different compared to the busy vibes of South Bali. West Bali offers an adventure that’s rich in culture and natural beauty. It doesn’t matter if you’re a first-time or seasoned traveler. So pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and set off to discover West Bali.
